Through storytelling and song, students at Washington Elementary School were immersed in the legacy of social activist and heroic abolitionist Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad as part of an interactive historical performance presented in partnership with The Music Center.
In Letters to Harriet Tubman, students learned about the remarkable life of Tubman, portrayed by Patti Henley, who was joined by her guitar-playing neighbor, Jeffrey Taylor, Jr., played by Carl Weintraub. Together, the duo captivated students with tales of the Underground Railroad, the struggles of slavery and the unyielding spirit of those who fought for freedom.
Students laughed, sang along to Civil War-era songs and African American spirituals, and reflected on the emotions of Tubman’s journey. The performers encouraged students to ask questions, helping them to connect with the emotions of the time. Students left with a greater appreciation for the power of perseverance, resilience and sacrifices made in the pursuit of freedom.
