Abbott Elementary Discovers the Magic of Jazz Music

Abbott Elementary students kicked off Black History Month on February 3 with an unforgettable jazz experience, where they listened, learned and engaged with professionals from the Los Angeles Jazz Society to explore the rich history behind jazz.

Students marched, danced and played instruments alongside the musicians in an interactive experience. As they moved between songs, they explored jazz's deep roots in African American culture, learning about the Black artists who pioneered and transformed the genre.

The performance highlighted different jazz styles, such as bebop, ragtime and blues, while also paying tribute to legendary figures like Miles Davis. Through live demonstrations of instruments like the trumpet, saxophone and drums, students gained a deeper understanding of the genre’s cultural significance and the artistry behind its creation.

The Los Angeles Jazz Society is dedicated to ensuring young students understand and appreciate the powerful impact of jazz – a genre born from the creativity, resilience and innovation of Black Americans.

Lynwood Unified is committed to celebrating Black history and achievement by providing students with meaningful educational experiences that honor the profound contributions of African Americans. By exposing students to the arts, history and creative expression, we empower them to embrace their potential and strive for excellence.
