Just days ahead of the start of the 2024-25 school year, Helen Keller Elementary School families returned to campus on August 9 for a Back-to-School Resource Fair, where they connected with school staff and visited various informational and giveaway booths designed to help ease the return-to-school transition.
Organized by Helen Keller’s Community Schools Case Manager Grace Funes and various local non-profits and organizations, the event included representatives from the California Department of Mental Health and Wesley Health Centers, which provided students with health and wellness resources; free healthy grab-and-go food bags donated by the Hands of Love Foundation; complimentary haircuts by Presidential Barber; backpacks filled with school supplies donated by various partners, and much more.
Lynwood Unified School District’s Community Schools strategy and partnering events help LUSD campuses serve as community hubs where students and families have easy access to the services needed to close opportunity gaps and ensure the success of the whole child.
Wesley Health Centers, a mobile dental unit resource that provides oral health check-ups, x-rays, and other services to Abbott, Helen Keller, Marshall, Lindbergh, Lugo, and Will Rogers elementary schools, handed out registration forms for the upcoming school year. The company also provided enrollment information for accessible and affordable health insurance for qualifying families.
Parents and guardians received free totes from Galaviz Printing to hold their items, while the students received free school supply kits, complete with pencils, markers, crayons, a ruler, a notebook and more.
Students lined up to receive a fresh, new cut from Presidential Barber, while families filled their tote bags with school uniforms, shoes, and other free clothing items at the fair’s Swap Shop. The event also featured a bracelet-making station, comic book booth, and skating non-profit booths, providing fun and engaging opportunities for students to learn, play, and earn prizes.
The first day of school for all Lynwood Unified students is Wednesday, August 14. Lynwood Unified teachers, administrators and staff look forward to welcoming scholars to another successful school year.
