Hosler Middle School Students Take Deep Dive into Ancient History with Visit from Greek Archeologist

Greek archeologist and historian Io Viktoratou traveled from across the world to Hosler Middle School on November 9 to bring a refreshing and engaging learning experience on Greek history to the classroom. The opportunity was made possible by Hosler history teacher Dawndria Cox, Ed.D., who visited the Mediterranean country as part of a prestigious fellowship just two years ago.

Cox traveled to the ancient ruins of Greece in 2021 and participated in the American School of Classical Studies summer program in Athens after earning the William Sanders Scarborough Fellowship. In pursuit of her goal to teach students the importance of knowing their place in history, Cox has worked diligently to bring back what she learned to the classroom.

Working through the Department of Classics and the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology program at UCLA, Viktoratou’s visit included a tour of classrooms, where students learned about Greek history, geography and democracy. They also engaged in discussions on the country’s unique history and architecture such as the world-famous Parthenon, how Greek culture set the stage for democracy worldwide, and comparing and contrasting Greek and American modern culture.

The in-depth presentation gave young learners an expanded perspective on world history and strengthened their knowledge of the development of modern society. The unique event was one of many opportunities the District provides to students to ensure they graduate from Lynwood Unified as culturally well-rounded individuals.
