Hosler Middle School Hosts Anti-Bullying Summit, Promotes Positive School Environment

Hosler Middle School hosted its first Anti-Bullying Summit, gathering students over the course of two days to learn about the impacts of bullying and how to develop self-love and appreciation for others as part of National Bullying Prevention Month.

Recognized every October, National Bullying Prevention Month raises awareness for the harmful effects of bullying while promoting kindness, acceptance and inclusion. Hosler Middle School, along with schools across the District, held a variety of activities to create safe spaces for students and staff, including wearing orange for Unity Day on Oct. 18.

Hosler’s Anti-Bullying Summit, held Oct. 24 and Oct. 26, was held during PE classes with the support of teachers. It featured presentations from Community Schools staff, Crossroads and The Movement on the types of bullying and its effects, cyberbullying and how to avoid the bystander effect. Students wrote anonymous notes reflecting on whether they've been bullied, how they show self-care and whether they love themselves as well as participated in an activity in which they erased mean words and phrases from their lives.

Hosler is a Model School and Common Sense School that has been recognized with a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Gold Award for fostering a positive campus climate and supporting student achievement through Student Summits, monthly PBIS meetings and restorative circles.

Lynwood Unified continually strives to enhance positive school environments, providing counseling services and other supports to help address the many challenges students have experienced over the last few years. Additionally, the District provides students with extensive academic, mental health and behavioral support through a new $24.4 million Community Schools grant.
