Board of Education Highlights 07.22.21

IN-PERSON MEETING

The meeting was an in-person gathering for the Board of Education, District leaders, and the public, but followed safe social distancing practices. The public was able to utilize teleconferencing and watch via Facebook Live. Public comment was available through email and voice recording prior to the meeting. Watch the meeting HERE.

TEXTBOOK ADOPTION

The District presented recommendations for new textbook adoptions for Early Childhood Education, Transitional Kindergarten, English language arts & math, secondary social studies, and secondary Spanish. The adoption recommendations include an intensive process that sees the textbooks prescreened by committees, implemented and piloted to ensure effectiveness for students and educators. The committees feature diverse representation from several schools and grade levels. The secondary textbooks would be an eight-year adoption and feature professional development, access to online resources, and Spanish materials for dual immersion. A future Board meeting will make an ultimate determination on the textbooks.

LYNWOOD HIGH SCHOOL’S NEW BULLIS CAMPUS

Chief Business Officer Gregory Fromm previewed the new Lynwood High School Bullis campus, which has undergone upgrades in preparation for the new school year beginning on Aug. 19. Renderings of the finished campus were showcased (VIEW RENDERINGS HERE) and special details highlighted.

The updates include the addition of new portable classrooms, as well as improvements to the dance room and locker rooms. Other campus modifications also include updated classrooms and science labs, and a renovated quad with added greenery. A new technology hub will be installed in spring 2022. The site on Imperial Highway will undergo construction but will still provide access to the District athletics field and gymnasium for sports programs.

REBUILD PROPOSAL OF LYNWOOD HIGH SCHOOL’S NEW BULLIS CAMPUS

The PBK-WLC Architectural Firm shared a proposal to rebuild the campus at the LHS Imperial site. The proposed campus is modeled on a recent Lodi High School facility and features 68 classrooms, with outdoor learning space, a large quad that connects the school community, and learning studios that connect STEM and specific programs in designated areas of the campus. The proposal would be a 16-month building process.

PBK-WLC is one of seven firms that submitted proposals for the LHS project. The District is in the process of forming a community committee to help with decision-making and shape the direction of the project.
