LHS Building Background

In June 2020, exterior ceiling panels collapsed from the G Building on the Lynwood High School.

Out of an abundance of caution, our Board of Education immediately closed the campus and launched an independent engineering review of all campus structures to ensure the integrity of the buildings.

It was determined that the only structure in duress was the G Building; other buildings on campus were safe, such as the library and gymnasium.

The investigation of the G Building found extensive internal structural issues, with some faults related to the 2020 ceiling panel collapse, and additional issues caused by the original contractors’ failure to construct the buildings in accordance with the approved plans. These internal construction defects are severe enough to threaten the basic structural integrity of the buildings.

It has been recommended that the District keep LHS closed to accommodate a rebuild. The District has realigned school site instruction, with LHS students returning to a revamped Lynwood Middle School (LMS) campus (the original LHS campus, which is being upgraded), LMS students moving to other middle school campuses, and students remaining at elementary campuses for sixth grade.

LUSD is evaluating the potential liability of all parties involved in the design, construction and original inspection of LHS. The District is also reviewing options to litigate and recuperate construction costs associated with fixing the LHS campus.

LUSD will continue to provide regular updates via the District website, social media and community messages as new information becomes available.
