TELECONFERENCING
The meeting utilized teleconferencing in accordance with safe social distancing practices. The meeting was also streamed to Facebook Live. Public comment was available through email and voice recording prior to the meeting.
STUDENT REPORTS
Students of Lynwood, Firebaugh, Pathway, and Vista high schools provided virtual updates on distance learning efforts and events. Students are being supported through new technology and hotspots for internet access, and recently received virtual visits from local college representatives. College and Career staff members will be assisting students with college applications next week, while each school continues its observation of Latino History Month.
FACILITIES UPDATE
New construction began at Lynwood High School on October 5 as the District moves forward with the emergency plaster soffit removal project. Chief Business Official Gregory Fromm provided an update on the project, which was able to be expedited for the safety of students and staff. It is expected to be completed by the end of November.
Career Technical Education (CTE)
The District received an update on its CalAps program, which Lynwood Unified created in partnership with Bellflower Unified four years ago to provide students with enhanced Career Technical Education (CTE) options for future success. Through the program, students gain industry experience, learn to prepare a resume, complete a mock interview, and participate in community service.
Courses are offered in more than 15 sectors, including education, building and construction trades, fashion, firefighting, hospitality, and arts/media. The 2020-21 CTE Distance Learning program continues to work with industry partners to build brighter futures for young people.
600K GRANT FROM CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION FACILITIES PROGRAM (CTEFP)
The District also announced that it has been approved for a $600,000 grant from the CTEFP to help build a new state-of-the-art STEM lab at Firebaugh High School. LUSD previously received a donation of $225,000 for the new lab from the W. M. Keck Foundation, and can now further minimize District cost on the project which will inspire young learners to pursue success in science, engineering and medical fields.
CHARLES R. DREW PARTNERSHIP
Lynwood Unified enjoys a partnership with Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science that will increase access to STEM, provide a targeted middle school program, and establish a pathway matriculation to undergrad education at CDU.
The District launched a partnership with CDU back in 2017 that allows students to apply for scholarships as early as 10th grade and provides early admission and waived application fees.
