Lynwood Unified Students Shine at MESA Regional Competition, Advance to State

Talented Lynwood Unified students showcased their brilliance at the Regional Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) competition on April 13, with Cesar Chavez Middle School students earning a spot in the National Engineering Design Competition (NEDC) on May 18.

CCMS students Nancy Gonzalez, Leilani Ceja, Phil Menjivar and Santiago Ramirez were tasked with designing and coding a project aimed at minimizing or eliminating barriers to opportunities for success – "Designing for Equity" – and fostering the chance to think globally and act locally in their communities.

The team crafted an outstanding website called "Lynwood's Helping Hands," serving as a valuable resource hub for their peers. Their creation clinched the second spot overall at the Regionals, securing them a spot in the state competition held in San Jose.

The state qualifiers have earned a well-deserved spot at the NEDC event in San Jose, where they will further demonstrate the creativity and innovation of Lynwood Unified students. Other students who shined at Regionals include:

  • CCMS students Aridai Martinez, Bella Hernandez and Christopher Soto claimed the first-place title with their inventive Cargo Glider, a launching mechanism challenged to fly the furthest and over obstacles.
  • CCMS students Valerie Estrada, Alexa Cordova and Audrey Jaimes earned third place overall with their creative and captivating Rube Goldberg MESA Machine, a multi-energy sourced contraption designed to lead a ball toward a target.
  • Firebaugh High School students Brigitte Lopez, Itzel Luna and Karen Garza earned a first-place victory with their “Think Tank” presentation, which focused on electric transportation and included an innovative 3D design concept for an all-inclusive electric vehicle.
